The island is divided into two separate ports or villages. They are named Oodomari and Nitoda. The island has less than 100 residents and they mainly work in either the hospitality or fishing business.
Cat Island was the brainstorm of a late manga artist and there are now manga-themed lodges on the island. The isle is home to over 1,000 cats.It maintains its reputation because the large cat population continues to thrive there. The local citizens, half of whom are over the age of 65, have a belief that feeding the cats will bring them good fortune and wealth.
During Japan’s late Edo Period many people of the island utilized to raise silkworms, althpugh residents were encouraged to keep cats to deal with the mice.
